Daytrips in the area

Villa Vanna is situated in a calm neighbourhood but in prime location to explore the many sites around the south of Sri Lanka. You reach all these places in less than 45 minutes from the villa.

GALLE FORT

Galle Fort is an Unesco World heritage site, it is an old colonial gem, charming and full of history. Today you find chic boutiques, cafes and restuarants in the narrow streets. The Dutch colonial buildings adds a real charm to the place and of course the main feature is the

Galle Fort Light House.

HUNDUNGODA TEA FACTORY

To visit a Sri Lankan tea factory is almost a must while in the country. The biggest and most famous tea factories are up in the mountains, but there are some here down south as well. One of them is Handunugoda Tea Estate, famous for its virgin white tea completely untouched by hand.

STILT FISHERMEN

Stilt fishing is a traditional type of fishing practiced by local fishermen mainly in the south of Sri Lanka.  Nowadays there are some that just are there for the tourists, but you can still see the real deal on early morning walks along the beaches of Talpe and Ahangama.

TURTLE HATCHERY

There are two Turtle Hatcheries in Habaraduwa/Koggala. Both of them take care of wounded turtles and also helps to protect the eggs laid on the beach, preventing them to get eaten by birds or dogs.

They tell you all about the turtles of Sri Lanka and their work and if you are lucky you come on the right day to let some small turtles out in the ocean to begin a new free life!

WHALE WATCHING MIRISSA

Blue Whales, the largest creatures on earth, as well as many more whales, dolphins, flying fish, turtles and whale sharks can all be seen during a whale watching trip a few miles off the south coast.

Raja & the Whales, a local family business, runs responsible whale watching trips almost all year-round.

SURFING

Of course you have to try to surf when in Sri Lanka! Dewata and Weligama are two great beaches for beginners. There are many places that rents surfboards and have instructors. We can recommend Raja Surf School, he is great both with total beginners and more advanced surfers of all ages. He will also go with you to different beaches to try the waves!

KOGGALA LAKE

A beautiful boat trip on Koggala Lake. You get to visit cinnamon island to see how cinnamon is made, get a fish spa and visit the temple island. If you are lucky you might also see some crocodiles luring in the shores.
